Dealing With Picture Files

TrainTrack was designed to handle pictures generated by a Sony Mavica MVC-FD95 Digital Camera when in e-mail mode. The e-mail pictures are 320 x 240 pixels which is a ratio of 1.3333:1.

If you are scanning pictures, you don't need a resolution greater than 72 dpi.

The setting in Program Defaults will determine how TrainTrack handles pictures of other sizes.

If checked, picture files will be expanded or squeezed to fit the 320 x 240 pixel default picture size. Following is an example of what can happen.

This is a 320 x 240 picture:

This is the same picture with the top and bottom cropped. The new size is 320 x 131.

If the Force to Fit Option is checked and we import the cropped picture into TrainTrack, it looks like this:

If the Force to Fit Option is unchecked and we import the cropped picture into TrainTrack, it looks like this:

If the picture were larger, only the upper left portion would show.

You should try to keep your pictures as close to the correct size and ratio as possible to avoid problems.

When you change the size of a digital picture, some of its quality is lost. The last picture above was enlarged from the e-mail version and you can see that it is not quite as sharp as the original. The picture below was reduced from a larger version. This can sometimes cause some of the straight lines to become jagged.
