Tree expansion preferences can be set by choosing File | Preferences on the Main Menu and clicking on the Tree Expansion tab.
This sets the default expansion for each of the Tree View Pane categories. Each category (locomotives, freight cars, or passenger cars) can be set separately. Below is shown examples of each expansion type.

Note the use of question marks above for locomotives that don't have numbers yet because they are under construction.
